Now that we are officially in Spring your grass should start to green up and grow.  We recommend that your grass should start to be cut weekly by now.  Most homeowners have a lawn maintenance service that will take care of your lawn on a weekly basis.  A good lawn maintenance company will know the best practices for keeping a healthy and vigorous yard.  However, if you take care of your lawn yourself here are a couple tips.

St. Augustine grass likes to be cut at 3.5 to 4″ to help develop a deep root system.  As a rule of thumb, you don’t want to cut more than a 1/3 off from the grass on any mowing.  The same is true when trimming any trees or shrubs.  That’s why its best to start cutting weekly this time of the year.  If you wait too long to cut the grass it will get tall and harder to cut.  If it gets too tall the mower will scalp the grass leaving a brownish appearance and overall stress the grass out.  Its also very important to sharpen your mower blades.  This doesn’t have to be done every time you cut the grass but I would recommend once a month.  Don’t bag your lawn clippings.  If you bag your lawn clippings you can actually take up to a 1/3 of the nutrients your grass requires to thrive.  Mulch the clippings back into your lawn to help retain nutrients.

I hope these tips help you with your lawn maintenance.  If you ever have any questions or concerns with your lawn you are more then welcome to give us a call.
